Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT MAKES A STAY AT THE GRAND HACIENDA EXTRAORDINARY?
Set amongst the most spectacular scenery in northern New Mexico – where the history and culture are ever-present, the geography is jaw-dropping, and the artist colony inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s home and studio are thriving. The Grand Hacienda opened its doors in 2020, after a three-year planning and building process. This is, perhaps, the most complicated build in recent years in all of northern New Mexico. The hacienda is traditional with period architecture, and yet has water conservation, solar, EMF shielding, grounded floors and more green features. The Hacienda provides guests with the best of both worlds – an escape from noise and light pollution, natural remote isolation away from the crowds and traffic, an authentic Inn with architectural details everywhere, and yet, all the green technology our earth craves. The Hacienda is remote, yet conveniently located near wonderful hiking trails, Abiquiú Lake and area attractions. The Grand Hacienda sits on above Abiquiú Lake, and our two lakefront lots are yours to enjoy. We offer personalized service; wonderful suites with private entrances, spa bathrooms, cable TV, luxurious linens and private portals with chimenea fire pots; convenient and comfortable amenities, including a full kitchen for our guests’ use, a hot tub overlooking the lake, a Great Room with a library, games, dining tables, and kiva fireplace; onsite hiking; a gourmet breakfast each morning with wonderful coffee, lattes or cappuccinos; an evening dessert or happy hour; lawn games; and unbelievable and spectacular views and vistas in every direction. For the most discerning traveler, there simply is no place like this in northern New Mexico.
HOW FAR IS THE GRAND HACIENDA FROM THE AIRPORT? FROM SANTA FE? TAOS?
Drive time from Albuquerque International Airport is about 2:15. Drive time from Santa Fe and Taos is about 1:15.
HOW FAR IS THE GRAND HACIENDA FROM GHOST RANCH?
It is approximately a 30-minute drive to Ghost Ranch. As the raven flies, we are located directly across the lake from the Ranch.
HOW DO I KNOW WHICHH SUITE IS BEST FOR ME?
We offer several lodging choices. The Grand Hacienda Bed and Breakfast is an adults-only experience. Each suite is different – and yet all suites have private entrances, king-sized beds, spa bathrooms, and private outdoor portals. The Rio Chama suite is the only suite with a soaking tub. The Abiquiu Lake suite has two leather chairs, perfect for relaxing inside with a good book. The O’Keeffe suite has a large table, perfect for those wanting to dine privately in their suite or work remotely.
ARE CHILDREN ALLOWED? ARE PETS ALLOWED?
The Grand Hacienda Estate is an adults-only property, welcoming young adults 16 years and older. We welcome pets in the Georgia O'Keeffe suite only; the Rio Chama and Abiquiu Lake suites are pet-free. There are pet restrictions - read more.

You may check-in any time after 3pm. If you are arriving after 5pm, just let us know and we will send you self-check-in instructions. Check-out is any time before 10 am.
WHAT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR FOOD?
A three-course gourmet breakfast is included each morning. For lunch and dinner, there is full kitchen for your use, including refrigerator and freezer space, where you can prepare meals. Our Mercado sells frozen and pantry food items for your convenience. If you want to venture out, we can suggest a number of restaurants in Abiquiu and the nearby area.
WHAT IF I HAVE A DIETARY RESTRICTION?
If you have a dietary restriction, please notate that when you complete your registration. With 24-hour notice, guests may opt to order a set menu (vegan and gluten-free) consisting of a breakfast salad, seasonal fruit with granola, followed by oatmeal and fixings, instead of the daily breakfast. In some instances we can modify the daily breakfast for those with dietary restrictions with a $10 upcharge per day.
DO YOU HAVE A STORE AT THE HACIENDA?
We have a small gift store/mercado at The Grand Hacienda for frozen items, sundries, snacks, apparel, gifts, books, art, souvenirs, and lotions and bath products. You can also shop and check-out online at www.TheGrandHacienda.com/mercado. The village of Abiquiu has a general store that is about 30 minutes away.
HOW DO HOT TUB AND KITCHEN RESERVATIONS WORK?
We started the reservation process during COVID so we could disinfect the shared areas between guests’ use. And, we discovered that everyone loved the sign-up process and the private time in the facilities. So, we will keep the reservation process in place going forward. You can sign up for your hot tub or kitchen reservation as soon as you make a reservation. Hot tub reservations are 45 minutes, starting on the hour. So, 7 – 7:45, 8 – 8:45, etc. When no one has signed up for a time, you may use the facilities at will.

We are here to assist and provide recommendations. You will find a detailed binder of activities in your suite as well.
WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE?
The weather in our “high desert” location is as varied as its landscape. During the summer, you can expect dry, hot days, with evenings and nights cooling down pleasantly. Even on the hottest summer days, you may want a jacket in the evening. Winter months are usually in the 40s during the day and dip into the 20s at night. In December and January, we can get snow, but it usually doesn’t last long. Spring flowers arrive early and sunset are spectacular all year round. The cottonwoods turn vivid yellow in October, a promises a beautiful sight along the Rio Chama.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME?
We will send you a detailed list of what we suggest packing a few weeks before your trip. Bring clothes made of quick-drying materials or those that wash easily, especially if you are planning on doing outdoor activities. Make sure you bring comfortable hiking shoes, boots or sneakers. Bring flip flops for the hot tub, and consider a pair of water sandals or shoes, especially if you’re going rafting or kayaking. Sunglasses, sunscreen and layered clothing are essential.
WHEN IS THE “BUSY” SEASON?
April through October, and all holidays, are our “busiest” times of the year. In order to get your preferred accommodations and dates, we recommend booking as early as possible for these time periods.
WHAT IS THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF NIGHTS MOST PEOPLE STAY AT THE HACIENDA?
The average length most guests stay with us is four days. Having said that, we have some who join us for a celebratory one night get-away, and many who stay for five to seven nights. We recommend at least three to allow enough time to enjoy the surrounding areas without being rushed, enjoy the local activities, and also enjoy spending time relaxing at The Hacienda with no agenda!
WHAT IS REQUIRED TO MAKE A RESERVATION? A DEPOSIT? IS IT REFUNDABLE?
To confirm your reservation, we require an initial deposit of fifty percent of your stay. This deposit is refundable up to 60 days prior to your arrival date less a $100 processing fee. Full payment of your reservation will be charged 60 days prior to your arrival date. If you must cancel your reservation within 60 days of your arrival, you will forfeit your entire deposit unless we are able to re-book your suite. We recommend purchasing traveler's insurance to assist you in case something comes up and you need to cancel your reservation.
WHAT IF ANONYMITY DURING MY VACATION IS IMPORTANT TO ME?
We are sensitive to the privacy of all our guests, some of whom may be well-known and recognizable. Because we believe everyone deserves a chance to get away, our staff will provide a personalized experience, and ensure that privacy is respected.
