‘Tis the season of the chuparosa, or hummingbird.

Our recent guests from Amsterdam shared how much they enjoyed watching the hummingbirds flit just outside their window at The Grand Hacienda. We were delighted to explain that New Mexico is home to 17 species of hummingbirds, many of which can be seen during their spring and fall migrations.
We feel truly fortunate that these vibrant little visitors choose to linger right outside our windows, putting on a dazzling show that, quite honestly, rivals anything on television.

Hummingbirds are the tiniest members of the avian world—and truly extraordinary creatures. Their wings beat an astonishing 50 to 200 times per second, and their hearts can race at over 1,200 beats per minute. To put that in perspective, a resting human heart averages just 65 to 100 beats per minute. They also take around 250 breaths per minute -- tiny bodies, moving at incredible speed.
But while these facts are impressive, what’s most meaningful isn’t just their biology—it’s their cultural and spiritual symbolism, especially here in New Mexico. We are fortunate to live in a region deeply rooted in Native American and Mexican traditions, where hummingbirds are seen as powerful symbols of joy, resilience, and healing. Their presence is more than a marvel of nature, it’s a reminder of the beauty, strength, and sacredness of life itself.

In Native American culture, hummingbirds are seen as healers -- gentle messengers that bring healing energy and assistance to those in need. Their presence is often considered a sign of good luck, a blessing to those fortunate enough to glimpse one. In some Pueblo traditions, the hummingbird is also a symbol of fire, representing vitality, transformation, and the life force.
In Mexican culture, hummingbirds are revered as messengers of good intentions, gracefully carrying thoughts and blessings from one person to another. If a hummingbird flutters near you, it is believed to be delivering positive energy or loving messages, possibly from someone far away, or even from the spirit world. In that moment, it’s said to be a time to pause, reflect, and send your own good intentions to those you love.
As beautifully expressed in a Papyrus saying:
“Legends say that hummingbirds float free of time, carrying our hopes for love, joy, and celebration. The hummingbird’s delicate grace reminds us that life is rich, beauty is everywhere, every personal connection has meaning, and that laughter is life’s sweetest creation.”
When a hummingbird visits, it’s more than a fleeting glimpse of nature’s magic—it’s a whisper of connection, hope, and meaning.

It’s no surprise that so many hummingbirds are drawn to The Grand Hacienda—their presence mirrors the spirit of this place: one of joy, peace, and positive energy. So the next time a hummingbird flutters near, take a moment. Think kind thoughts, send out good intentions, and allow yourself to witness a little everyday magic.
